Final Film

Script written by Callum West
Filming done by Nathan Denny
Editing done by Charlie Hudson

In what ways does your media product develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Last minuet change of actor.

Unfortunately the actor Naomi Cunningham could not take part in the recording because she needed to do some work for music... as such we have managed to replace her with a much better qualified and much more cooperative actor. Sarah Chandler has been able to re shoot some of the previous scenes with Sarah Wright and overall the quality of acting has much improved. Whilst Sarah Chandler does not do drama, she does do biology and chemistry making the film much more believable.

The importance of advertiseing and trailers.

The importance of advertiseing and trailers.

Jack the giant slayer was predicted to only gain real success inside America and Europe it did however reach number 1 in Russia and the Ukrain... Here is why.

The advertising budget of this film was huge! All across the world there were mysterious giant footprints, bus stops consumed by shoots and leaves and billboards supported by giant beanstalks. Warner Brothers used the full power of their advertising department to ensure that this film would reach people all the way out in Mexico, Russia  and Canada allowing it to almost treble the amount of box office takings made by Identity Theft in the same opening weekend.

Warner Bros.

In my post about audience reasearch I compared my film to films like Inception and The Matrix. When I was doing my reasearch on production companies I discovered that Warner Brothers produced both of these films. I had recently been to Warner Brothers (Time Warner) for some extra work experiance  so when I discovered this I was keen to phone and ask about weather my kind of film would in theory be something that Warner Brothers would produce. I spoke to my freind Mark who works in international release data, for instance when China banned American films he was involved in making sure that I am Legend could be shown there. I therefore thought he would be perfect to tell me weather my film was something Warner Brothers would produce on a local or international level. he said that

"Warner Brothers obviously don't take much intrest in shorts anymore but if you made it into a feature length film then I don't see why they wouldn't produce it, a psychological mystery is definately well within our ethos and I can imagine if you came back in a few years time with a strong pitch it could go down pretty well"

I thought this was really amazing because after all my time working at Warner Bros, I managed to see films like inception inside of the directors cinema and now I'm really looking forward to getting my film made and finalised.

Also when I was looking the logos of Time Warner and Eagle Eye I noticed some similarities forinstance, both logos are made of a few very simple shapes and both logos have the focus of the image in the middle. I think this is to makesure that the audience can assess the style of the logo and recognise who it represents very quickly.

Analysis second day of filming.

Unfortunately I was not able to be present on the second day of filming because I had to attend a History mock exam. However Charlie and Nathan mangaged to get some really good work done. The scene that they shot was of Morgan after the global apocalypse inside of Leo's mind. The shots that they took look very good and they also had the idea instead of Nathan (Morgan) acctually speaking he should voice over the shot to create a feeling of deeper and more emotional thought.
Analysis of the Third day of filming.

The third day of filming both Charlie and Nathan were unable to make it which made it particularly difficult because I was acctually in the scene but I managed to film the cafe scene really easily and then set the camera to record as a walked in. I will however have to edit out the part where I walk back and turn the camera off but overall I think that the day went rather well.
Analysis of first day of filming.

The first day has gone well. despite some minor location issues and technical difficulties, the cast and crew has come together nicely to help get through it. Firstly the office we had originally planning on using was locked because the person in charge had forgotten to leave it open. However we moved location to one of the offices on school grounds and created a very convincing opening sequence.

Eagle Eye

Eagle Eye.

Company Logo

Eagle Eye is an independent company focused on highlighting problems with society by using films as metaphors for wider problems and issues that people face every day. The companies upcoming film Omnishambles addresses the problems of a man struggling with anxiety and the issues surrounding homosexual relationships. The companies C.E.O Callum West is committed to forging  the companies image as a independent and creative company. The managing director Charlie Hudson has high hopes for the companies future and believes that with the right creative input the company can go on to achieve great things. Nathan Denny the companies field director will be assisting with this creative input and says that "with the current companies ethos and work ethic I am sure we will go on to create brilliant film"
Change of location

Unfortunately the cafe that had previously agreed to allow us to film in has informed us that we are no longer allowed to film their because the management team told them it would not be allowed. So we have had to make a last minuet decision to change the location to the Crusty Corner Cafe.

Audience Research

As you can see from these results the mystery Genre gains the most amount of votes in ages 31-50 making these people our target audience. The fact that our film is also a psychological Drama will also help us appeal to the over 50s audience therefore our target audience is definitely males of a more mature age. The auidience that we are targeting will also most likely be a range of incomes and educational backgrounds because of the fact that the film has an intresting yet accessable plot similar to films like the matrix and inception.

Scene 1 setup
The room is a large office. The table is round. There are two chairs. The lighting is bright. Both characters are seated. There is little to no background noise.

Morgan: so will you be continuing your relationship with Mrs. Natalie?

The camera then zooms in close to Leo’s eye and a tunnel effect transition plays displaying that we are in fact going deep into the inner most thoughts of Leo.

Scene 2 setup:
The scene displays a large empty wasteland. The air is damp. Rubble is littered all over. There are large mounds of mud. A radio is playing. A can is lying on the floor.

Morgan: (walks over to radio and turns it off) (turns as if addressing the can) The world that we knew, we believed it so secure, so concrete. Little did we know that life is far more fragile than any of us could ever have conceived… I remember how it all began.

Scene 3 setup: a girl is seated in a coffee shop. The lighting is bright and welcoming. There are few other customers. The background noise is quite.

Natalie: (walks in door) (bends over and kisses Jade) (sits down and looks at Jade romantically)
Jade: I’m so glad we finally managed to meet up I’ve just been so swamped at work recently I hardly ever get to see you even when we’re at home
Natalie: (disgruntled but not overtly annoyed) Yeah maybe you should take some time off so we can spend a bit more time together.
Jade: I would love to but we’re so close! I mean like a couple of weeks and the cure will be finalized… Forever!
Natalie: I know that but maybe just a day or two off?
Jade: I’ll see…
(Jade’s phone rings)
Jade: right now?
Jade: I’ll see what I can do.
Jade: I’m really sorry, I have to go (genuinely sympathetic) I’ll make it up to you as soon as possible I promise. (Gets up kisses Natalie and leaves)
(Leo bumps Natalie on her way out and comes in to sit next to Natalie)
Leo: Is it ok if I sit here?

Scene 4 setup: The camera is focused on a table. The table has a few scratches and looks well used. Then super imposed images of newspapers about Jade’s upcoming success start traveling across the screen. As each image travels past a newspaper is added to a pile on the table.

Scene 5 set up: Jade and Natalie are in a park. They are walking together hand in hand. There is a bright natural light. Bird song can be heard in the background. The sounds of children playing can also be heard.

Jade: (gets down on one knee) I know we haven’t been on best terms recently what with me being so busy and you taking writing lessons but… well… I was wondering… (looks up smiling) will you marry me? (close up of Natalies shock ridden face)
Natalie: I can’t… I just can’t
(Natalie runs of crying)

Scene 6 setup: The room is a large lab with several tables. There are two other scientists in the background. There is an array of scientific books and equipment scattered around the room. The lighting is dark.

Jade: (working with chemicals)
Morgan: I just came in to let you know that I am very pleased with your progress
Jade: Thank you sir.
Morgan: (exits)
Natalie: (goes over to the window) (camera shows Leo and Natalie together laughing and enjoying themselves) (walks back over to chemicals furious)
Jade: I’m ready to begin the process
Assistant (hands over chemicals)
Jade: (pours in chemicals) I can’t do this (runs out jogging the assistant) (camera shows the concoction fizzing)

Two men sit alone in an office. The first stares intently into the seconds eyes and says “Do you wish to continue your relationship with Miss Natalie?” suddenly the audience is transported deep into the mind of Leo Hardwin (the second man) and the year is 2050. The world as we know it is at an end. It has been transformed into a wasteland infested with marauders, mutants and other sickening creatures. Sitting alone in a pile rubble and filth squats Morgan Phoenix (the first man) the once handsome and business like man is now barely a shadow of his former self. He looks older and wearier.

He begins talking but the audience does not immediately see to whom he is addressing. The camera then reveals it to be a tin can, showing that Morgan has indeed lost his mind. As Morgan retells the tale of how a simple break up can bring about the end of humanity he reaches for the can, the audience is transported again, this time into a coffee shop. Two girls (Natalie Richardson and Jade Wilson) talk about their relationship and all of Jades success in the last few years. Jade then returns home and sits down in front of an empty shelf. The scene moves into hyper fast forward and the shelf begins to fill with newspaper clippings, awards, medals and trophies.

However whilst Jade is celebrating the success of her scientific career, Natalie goes to visit a friend from the office.  As she scans the room for her friend the camera then settles upon Leo. She sits down and the two begin to converse. They talk about how Natalie and Jades cure for cancer is progressing, they also talk about how obsessed Jade has recently become with her work. As time goes on Natalie and Leo start seeing each other more and more frequently.

Jade however is becoming more and more obsessive about her work and begins to neglect those around her, right up until she makes a break through that will ultimately bring about a vaccine for cancer, curing those who have it and preventing anyone else from ever catching it. Delighted by her amazing discovery, Jade decides to propose to Natalie. However when Jade does decide to propose Natalie is no longer sure if she can follow through with a relationship that she is no longer sure she can maintain.

With her love for Leo increasing and her relationship with Jade failing she decides to reject Jade’s proposal and call an end to their relationship. The next day Jade is working hard on the final touches to her cure for cancer. Whilst she is working however she spies Leo and Natalie walking down the drive to the lab together laughing and joking. Outraged Jade slams her fist onto the table. Unbeknownst to her however this fit of rage sets off a small train of events that lead to a small drop of a substance bearing the toxic symbol into a test tube marked ‘Final Cure’ As the drop of toxic substance hits the cure sample the audience is then transported back into the office.

Morgan then repeats “Well? Will you be continuing your relationship with miss Natalie?” to which Leo replies “No sir I’ll end it right away” After this Leo goes home and is sitting alone. Natalie then messages him asking if he would like to come and meet her for dinner some time. Leo replies that he does not think it would be appropriate, To which Natalie replies ‘What’s the worst that could happen’…

Character analysis

One of the characters in our film is Jade Wilson who is a leading biochemist at geneco, she is engaged to Natalie Richardson and is currently working on a cure for cancer. As a scientist she needs to appear intelligent and commanding. She is also the character that will ultimately end up causing the global pandemic that leads to the destruction of the earth. For this role I have picked Sarah Wright she currently studying chemistry, biology and physics which makes her perfect for playing the role of a scientist.

Another of our characters is Natalie Richardson. She plays a happy and cheerful individual who is struggling to repress her true sexuality as she is afraid of offending her girlfriend Jade Wilson. Natalie needs to be able to express a wide variety of emotions as she goes from cheerful to depressed very quickly, Therefore I have picked Naomi Cunningham for the role as she has qualifications in GCSE and A-Level drama she has also performed in theatre productions such as Oliver, Bugsy Malone and Grease. This shows that she has a wide range of acting experience and would be ideal for a role where a wide range of emotions are essential to maintaining the character.
Check out our interview @ charlie hudson As media blog: character profile: Naomi Cunningham:

Morgan Phoenix is the name of the C.E.O of the company Gene Co where both Natalie Richardson, Jade Wilson and Leo Hardwin work. Morgan has a position of authority and command however he is also the narrator from the post apocalyptic world this means that a talented actor will be required to play him because they will need to be able to illustrate the fall from glory that this character experiences, showing the contrasts between extreme wealth and abject poverty. Therefore for this role I have chosen Nathan Denny who is an experianced actor with a GCSE and A level qualification in drama.

The last major character in this film is called Leo Hardwin. Leo suffers from a form of anxiety in which every time he is confronted with conflict he immidiatly jumps to the worst possible outcome. Throughout his life he is a very passive and submissive person. However in Leos own mind he is a carefree and passionate individual and therefore as the film takes place within the mind of Leo, who ever plays Leo must be able to show a variety of different personality trates. I will be playing this role for several reasons. Firstly having writen the script I have a firm knowledge of how the character should act and behave. Secondly I am studing both media and film and so will be well aware of how to portray the character. Thirdly I have taken part in a Drama course and stared in a short film (God save the Queen) therefore I should have adiquate acting experience.

Manhattan 1979

The opening to Manhattan (1979) hits the auidience immediatly with a montage of picturesc and romantic shots with lots of quick jump cuts peiced together to establish an attractive and alluring image of New York, This image of New York is vital to the rest of the plot because the main character Isaac (Woody Allen) is writing a book on his love for New York. The distance of the shots range from medium shots of children playing to extream long shots of fireworks exploading over the Empire State building. This allows the auidience to form a picture of New York as a whole, from the grandour of the soaring sky scrapers to the squalor of the city streets. This is similar to the feel I want to create in my film. Whilst I cannot create an entire city, I can use similar techniques to that of this film to form the illusion that the events that are occuring are also affecting the world on a much wider scale.

The classical music during this opening (rhapsody in blue by George Gershwin) helps to submerse the auidience even more into the feelings and culture behind New York allowing the auidience to feel so much more engaged with the setting. This coupled with the smooth voice of Woody Allen giving a voice over on the allure of New York makes the setting almost irresisitably attractive. Yet you can always hear the background noise of traffic to increase the sense of realism.

In conclusion whilst the scale of this opening is very difficult to recreate, in terms of cinematography it is a very similar feeling to that which I want to make in my film.

A mysterious stranger relays the trail of events that turn a happy relationship into a global apocalypse in this  curiosity fueled drama.

Mood Board

I have chosen these pictures because they represent a similar post apocalyptic world to the one that I wish to recreate. They show that humanity has turned in on itself and formed a new anarchic way of living amongst the rubble and the chaos. Whilst I understand that it will be difficult to recreate this kind of chaos and anarchy in a two minuet film I believe that it will be possible to show this kind of destruction on a much smaller scale and then use editing and dialogue to make the audience believe that this situation is a global issue.

Audio Inspiration (opening analysis)

High Fidelity's opening is in terms of audio exactly what I want to recreate in my film. The classic "You're gonna miss me" by the 13th floor elevators begins as an intro but then gradually fades to give the impression that it is being played through headphones this technique is known as sound perspective. This shift from non diagetic sound into seemingly diegetic makes the audience understand immediately that music will be a major theme throughout the film. It also shows us that Rob uses music to escape from reality because all the audience can hear is his private  monologue. This is also highlighted by the fact that when Lauren unplugs the headphones she immediately uses dialogue to present problems showing the audience that as soon as Rob is exposed to  reality he is faced with problems. Also the lecture that Rob gives about the correlation between music and rejection gives a very intellectual and emotional feel to the film.
However whilst the auido in this opening scene is very similar to what I want to recreate in my film the mise-en-scene is not at all similar to what I want to film. The mise-en-scene of this clip works very well with the theme it is trying to create. The vinyl record  spinning on the turn table highlights the importance of music this coupled with the numerous posters and alphabetically organized records also give the impression that Rob has a compulsion for list making. The headphones on Rob's head when he talks about the misery that pop music creates add to the idea of the inevitability and all powerful nature of pop music, the fact that even Rob who understands the pain that pop music causes wears headphones suggests that there is no escape from the pop genre. Whilst the mise-en-scene fits high fidelity's genre it does not fit the genre of film that I am trying to make and thus sadly I cannot use many of the props and pieces of set design within my film.
The cinematography of this clip contains certain elements that I would want to use within my film. For instance the close up of Robs face as he does his monologue creates a very personal and sincere feeling adding to the emotional impact of the message. Earlier as the camera tracks the length of the headphones it creates a build up of suspense as we wonder who the character that is listening to the music is. However even as the camera reaches Rob it only displays the back of his head further increasing suspense to almost X-factor proportions. Then after Lauren enters the room the camera shows us a close up image of Lauren's hand pulling out the wire from the headphone jack, almost literally wrenching Rob back into reality.
